Passive house construction and high-performance windows and doors in this townhouse addition allowed us to create walls of glass with an indoor-outdoor experience to a roof deck clear of all mechanicals. People want the best house they can have, and designing to Passive House is a great way to get them there.

The top volume steps back, allowing for a terrace atop the bottom bar's roof. Large stretches of glass are partly shaded by overhanging roofs. Photo © Karl Neumann Built in the Italian Renaissance Revival style, the building has a beautifully detailed tapestry brick façade featuring unique terra cotta spandrels decorated with sporting equipment, large wood and steel windows, copper detailing, and a barrel-vaulted metal roof.

Externally the design employs a robust and timeless palette of in situ-concrete walls and roofs, anodized aluminium battens, minimalistic balustrading, feature breeze blocks, and honed concrete steps and terracing. The upper floor bedroom is intimate and extraordinary with a large bath featured at the window side in the open plan.

Flat roofs hover above two wings of the home, providing large overhangs and covered outdoor spaces. Flat roofs were proposed to allow for inside-outside relationships during rainy periods with floor to ceiling glass and skylights being utilized to provide maximum natural light. © Woven Architecture and Design.
