Junya Ishigami 'excavates' concrete cave for restaurant and residence in Japan

Asked by the client for a space that "has to look as if it has been there and will continue to be there for the longest time," Ishigami responded with a cave-like structure punctured by three courtyards. Concrete was then poured in situ and the surrounding earth excavated further to reveal the final form.

Completed in 2014, Gehry’s landmark building is undoubtedly an architectural icon, but manages to retain a reference for both its site in the heart of Paris’s beloved park and for the city as a whole. When I walked the site for the first time, I cried imagining the history of the Jardin de Climitation.
