I went to Brush Creek Ranch, a mainstay on "Best of" lists, to see why. Much of the lore stems from the development of the so-called dude ranch, which formed as actual ranching was becoming less and less profitable in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Upscale, Western-style getaways have surged in popularity in recent years.

Within a few days, Najjar moved into a shared room in the resort’s staff house, a bare-bones, converted barn called the Ranch. Najjar landed at the famous Fire Island Pines Resort , a wood-paneled commercial hub with a nightclub, hotel, restaurants, shops, and pool deck, within the namesake enclave of about 600 beach homes and rentals.
