For me, this process always starts with a design brief and my sketchbook (or iPad ). There’s something about the scale and how manageable it is to solve simple problems that helps me move forward. Once I’ve fleshed out a few ideas and a direction for the design I’ll move into the computer to draw it more precisely.

In the translucent pouch on the back flap, I always carry a sketchbook with me. Currently it’s the TRACE sketchbook with a subtle white reticle on 90# vellum. I also use the BLANK Sketchbook with the subtle dot grid, debossed cover + elastic closure.

Physical traces of change in the daily life of people as the years go by. I used SketchBook Pro and Pixlr, two softwares that passed through Autodesk's hands in the days when they embraced the "cloud - mobile - social" mantra. It is off centre, presumably for pragmatic reasons. It amounts to the same thing.

In no particular order, my list of must have architectural tools include: Sketch Pens and Trace Paper I don’t spend much any time drafting on the computer any more outside of the times I prepare the construction drawings for my own playhouse or when I’m preparing documents for my own house. NOT 4″ D-ring binders which suck.

I use a 12″ wide x 50 yard long roll of trace paper , and an architectural scale (which is used to measure out dimensions as I sketch and I use the edge to tear the trace paper off the roll). It drives me slightly crazy to have a roll of trace paper constantly rolling away when I am trying to sketch. Whats your guess.

You want a sketchbook that fits easily in your hands, something that's portable so you’ll always have it with you. You also want to pick up a few rolls of tracing paper.
