“Our clients were, as were we, drawn to the original home, complete with its pitch tiled roof and steel windows. The clients valued the home’s original, well-crafted heritage elements, leading to a thorough salvage and restoration process. There is now also a substantial workshop and a wine cellar tucked below this new wing.

It is clad in untreated green English oak and features pitched roofs that were informed by Oxford's river boathouses and traditional wooden barns. The buildings have blocky, monolithic forms with load-bearing concrete facades, each finished with recessed windows and their own muted colour palette.

A square pavilion will be added to the gallery grounds It will be angled 45 degrees to the gallery, intending to relate to the two entrances to the site, while circular windows will give views across the landscape. The pavilion will have an opening in the timber roof, filtering natural light into the centre of the space.

As a consequence of spending more time at home during the Covid-19 lockdowns, the clients wanted to restore the existing outbuilding into a usable space for hobbies and DIY. A priority of the renovation was the removal of the damaged roof, which contained asbestos. A pyramid-shaped window has been added.

Local firm Marlon Blackwell Architects designed five structures for the school and oversaw the restoration and relocation of Thaden's historic childhood home, which was moved from a site in Bentonville to the school campus. In the main performance hall , a large window offers views of the campus while bringing in soft, indirect daylight.

The sloping roof over the triforium was dropped down to almost flat, allowing the the sills of the clerestory windows to be lowered, so light could flood in above the heads of the congregation. Beams are joists that support a building's ceiling or roof. The apartment's original colourful tile flooring, which the studio uncovered during the restoring, completes the space. The designer decided to restore the original beams in the ceiling and left the bare brick walls tarnished with black marks to add to the weathered look.

The ravine restoration earned certification as a Wildlife Habitat. The roof’s tension rod structure pays homage to steamship details. An aluminum shade protects exhibits, extending the roof and minimizing its edge. The glass enclosure blends with the park’s historic structures, creating an elegant platform.

The barns’ roof and central doors, both front, and rear, slide open simultaneously when in use. When in its closed configuration, only four windows are visible, limiting the amount of change in material showcasing a more monolithic silhouette. I believe that restorations or repurposing of existing buildings is a very subtle art.

The buildings now house a collection of 12,000 objects, several permanent exhibitions, a knowledge centre with research library, workshop space and auditorium, museum café and laboratories for design and prototyping. The recognisable Kropholler principles and details were restored during the renovation, and they also inspired the new design.
