The building form takes it cues from the program elements, with a larger industrial shed-like form housing the Market and warehouse; and a smaller, more residentially scaled sloped roof form creating a welcoming entry and housing the Kitchen, HUB and offices. The project restored a formally abandoned brownfield site.

Now, adding insult to injury, the annex is sporting an awkward new roof. I can’t figure out why the roof has a jog at the side. The terra cotta façade of an Art Moderne movie theater still appears new. This one has been recently updated with new paint and a new roof. Many were never completed.

The wood flooring planks comprise domestic roof boarding, and the concrete and glass walls were recycled, while the tiling from the bathrooms was salvaged. The scheme fuses the industrial past with modern functionality. Modern interventions are sensitively negotiated.

Located in the Clinton Hill neighbourhood, the red brick facade of the house was restored to harken back to its 1873 origins, with arched windows and central garage doors painted in black. The brick facades conceal the remodelled interior of the home, with a completely new floor for the primary suite at the top of the building.
