Four triangular metal pillars support a roof featuring a dodecagonal oculus, all of which are lacquered in black. Triangular beams of light project between the roof and the enclosure, creating a new star that shifts with the sun’s movement. The space is slender, vertical, and dim. They are doing so.

Designed by local firm SAW , or Spiegel Aihara Workshop, the project entailed the overhaul and expansion of a 1930s, Spanish Revival-style dwelling that sits on a long, rectangular property. They lifted up the entire house and modernised the foundation using a thick mat slab. A roof deck offers a sweeping view of the city and the bay.

In excavating the top layer of soil, it became feasible to lift the entire house, and to modernize the entire foundation with a relatively thick mat slab.
