A few years ago, before the 100th anniversary of Poland regaining its independence, the Polish Government restored the priority of the project. According to the competition assumption, the Palace will be rebuilt in its external Neoclassicist form of 1939. The reconstruction project was put off in time because of the global financial crisis.

Negotiating the conflict between urban development and wildlife conservation was the central challenge of this landscape project, which involved a sensitive extension to an established giant panda research institution. This transitory space can be closed off to form an outdoor venue for performances and memorial events.

Led by urban development company Sogent in collaboration with Design Museum Gent, Carmody Groarke, RE-ST and TRANS Architectuur, the project aims to sensitively restore the museum’s existing buildings, extend the original masterplan and broaden the museum’s programme of design culture and visitor outreach.

While a developer was sought to fund the structure’s restoration, the appeal was unsuccessful. The 1960s heralded a destructive spate of urban development in Brussels, from which the neologism Brusselization was coined. Over time, many of the capsules fell into disrepair and were abandoned.
