Too often, urbanization is undertaken at the expense of the natural environment rather than in support of it. When architects respond thoughtfully to a site’s native ecology, development can elevate nature and shape meaningful, enduring spaces that enrich the planet and the lives of its population.

Led by urban development company Sogent in collaboration with Design Museum Gent, Carmody Groarke, RE-ST and TRANS Architectuur, the project aims to sensitively restore the museum’s existing buildings, extend the original masterplan and broaden the museum’s programme of design culture and visitor outreach.

Despite preservation campaigns and protests, the structure’s owners, the Pennsylvania Railroad, embarked on a three-year demolition plan in 1963 and rented out the air rights to the site. While a developer was sought to fund the structure’s restoration, the appeal was unsuccessful. Erected in its place was Madison Square Garden.

The living breakwater is the connective tissue for the overall masterplan and will be punctuated by a series of site-specific installations. Titled Concrete Coral, the site-specific installation will reframe cars and trucks—a symbol of the emissions that endanger our planet—as new vehicles for environmental change.
