One of my new tasks this semester in my academic position is to be a member of the departmental committee for lectures and exhibitions. This committee is tasked with creating the annual lecture and exhibitions program for the Department of Architecture. This has turned out to be quite the conundrum for yours truly. While I do not have any issue with being on the committee or being an active member, I find myself questioning the premise as a whole.

Johannesburg is definitely not the only metropolitan city that is guilty of abandoned landmarks, but unfortunately Jozi has a long list of unused and deteriorating buildings which were once considered architectural masterpieces. It seems as if Johannesburg spends a lot more time looking toward the future, with new high-rise buildings going up on the regular, than focusing on and restoring its past.

Nvidia, a Santa Clara, Calif.-based technology company that designs graphics processing units (GPU) for gaming and professional markets, thinks it’s come up with a solution: Omniverse, which Nvidia describes as the first RTX-based 3D simulation platform that fuses the physical and virtual worlds in real time.

The National Museum of the United States Army (NMUSA), a cultural institution that is the first to tell the story of the oldest branch of the United States military, recently completed and opened on Veterans Day. Located 20 miles outside of Washington, D.C., the facility is designed to serve as a center of education, and the symbolic front door of the Army.

McEvoy Apartments, a new 100% affordable housing development in San Jose, will comprise two 12-story towers over a podium, rooftop gardens, a courtyard, and generous gathering areas. The project will be built using a mass timber frame with a traditional lateral system. One of the towers will include 141 apartments geared toward families in one-, two-, and three-bedroom units while the second tower will provide 224 studios for working individuals and couples.

Academic researchers and more than 40 industry partners will establish a National Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Construction. The goal is to identify key high-impact areas for applying AI in design and construction. A team of researchers from the University of Illinois and Carnegie Mellon University has received grants and support from the National Science Foundation and the Discovery Partners Institute for the effort.

HWKN has unveiled Bushwick Generator, a new office campus meant to embody the Brooklyn neighborhood’s energy and tradition of disruptive entrepreneurship. As part of the campus’ design, the light-industrial buildings that existed on site were reimagined as part of the new building’s foundation. Atop this base, HWKN designed a brick-clad, sculptural, gem-like volume that introduces a vertical focal point in the neighborhood and comprises 400,000-sf of workspace. .

The Appellate Division of the New York state court upheld a ruling last week that makes it easier for condo boards suing over construction defects to recoup money that investors earned from the project. The court ruled that a condominium board does not have to prove a fiduciary or confidential relationship between itself and the building’s sponsor when suing over construction defects.

Sustainability begins with a conversation, and acquiring customer buy-in is entirely dependent on how the conversation is framed.
