BIG plans: Architecture isn’t Bjarke Ingels Group’s only growth path

Sometime late this year, Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) expects to move its headquarters into 52,000 sf of space in Brooklyn, N.Y.’s Dumbo neighborhood, which has been dubbed that borough’s Tech Triangle. BIG’s new location, on the 9 th floor of 45 Main Street, will be more than double the 22,000 sf that the firm currently leases in lower Manhattan, where 200-plus employees work in warren-like proximity.

The Shed, a multi-arts center on New York’s west side, moves forward in construction and funding

Affordable housing initiative drives surge in residential unit permits in New York City

New York officials credit a first-quarter surge in residential unit permits in the first quarter to a property tax-break program for developers. Along with a strong economy, the Affordable New York initiative helped triple New York City’s residential permits compared with the same period in 2016. The permits account for 6,343 units, which is the largest number since 2007.

Design billings increasing entering height of construction season

After beginning the year with a marginal decline, the Architecture Billings Index has posted three consecutive months of growth in design revenue at architecture firms. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lead time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the April ABI score was 50.9, down from a score of 54.3 in the previous month.
