Because it was an unreservedly plain and straightforward design strapped by a miserly budget, BOORA chose to rely upon the superficial application of a distinctive exterior color scheme to provide Olive Plaza with visual interest. The Portland firm of Broome, Oringdulph, O’Toole, Rudolf & Associates (BOORA) was the architect.

He performed much of the construction labor himself, from clearing the site, to pouring the foundations, hoisting 500-pound beams into place, and tilting up 15’ tall wall sections (don't worry, he called on friends and utilized wall jacks to help with the really heavy lifting). Moreover, he finds time to maintain his professional practice.

When altering both the interior and exterior, a sensitivity to the existing structure was observed. There is no mistaking what is new vs. old, but the new addition utilizes a brick chosen to match that of the existing house, and to pay homage to the greater Toronto vernacular.

The Makers’ KUbe is a 50,000-square-foot mass timber cube structure. The KUbe’s distinct timber diagrid frame – engineered by structural engineer StructureCraft – is optimized to reduce material and curtail carbon-intensive concrete. All interior materials are recyclable.
