The extension is accessed by steps that also function as bookshelves and informal seating. Relocating an existing boiler cupboard maximised the opening between the kitchen and extension and opened up views through the house from front to back. A linear rooflight runs above the steps and floods the spaces with natural light.

When altering both the interior and exterior, a sensitivity to the existing structure was observed. The new addition stands in contrast with contemporary details, larger open spaces, and modernist massing. This curvaceous approach also acts as a diagram to contrast new vs old.

The shape of the building is stepped with sweeping curves, which structure the volume visually. The rear-ventilated wood construction made of rhombus strips in glazed ash structures the façade vertically. Horizontally, the façade is divided by white, weather-resistant coated metal strips. The garden has a park-like character.
