Interior design studio Vives St-Laurent has remodelled a family house in Montreal , Canada, using a grey colour palette, quartzite stone and white-oak furniture to create an interior that highlights the building's architectural elements. Standing out in that portfolio is the contemporary relic of Garden Lane Residence, a period restoration of a nineteenth-century Victorian terrace bordering the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne’s South Yarra. These were juxtaposed with sustainable, locally crafted Hebel walls that further enforce the traditional and modern synergy.

The sweeping staircase’s balustrade is block colour, the same as the walls that surround it, yet the walls are finished in mottled clay plaster. The mica mixed into the clay plaster adds a shimmer to the rougher, tonal finish, exaggerating this shadow play. The limited material palette is enlivened by textural contrasts.
