The extension is accessed by steps that also function as bookshelves and informal seating. Relocating an existing boiler cupboard maximised the opening between the kitchen and extension and opened up views through the house from front to back. A linear rooflight runs above the steps and floods the spaces with natural light.

The main contractor completed the building work in 20 weeks. It’s easy to do and can look more contemporary than other techniques. Keeping a lot of the original structure and upgrading the roof insulation helped to reduce the carbon footprint of this project. How long…and how much? Was the project affected by the pandemic?
