Hutton designed the facades using local limestone, arranged in bands For added protection from both wind and wildfire , the facility is made of concrete and clad in durable and noncombustible exterior materials such as limestone and glass. Flanking this central zone is the garage on one side, and a large gathering space on the other.

The main volume, which looks east toward the city, is a rectangular bar that holds the public zone and primary sleeping areas. The exterior also features generous stretches of low-iron glass , known for its high transparency. Similar to the exterior, the interior design takes cues from the desert landscape. The orientation of each and every space, interior and exterior, to the surrounding vegetation, water, and sun largely drove the house’s siting and floorplan. Much of the house’s interior and exterior was given “living” finishes that will age beautifully and gracefully, lasting many years with little or no maintenance.
