In the most reductive sense, retail structures are zones of transaction — environments that facilitate the sale of goods and services. Inside, intimate display rooms are zoned with columns and wall dividers punctuated by apertures. Interested in participating next season? Marketplaces are no longer tethered to the main street.

However, they also act as privacy dividers between the bedrooms and the communal zones. In the main dining room, rhythmic timber slats outline a lofty vaulted ceiling — the same treatment runs the length of the restaurant, softening the daylight from the windows and cocooning patrons from the hubbub of the city.

Located in Haimen District of Nantong City, Changle Town is the hometown of Zhang Jian (1853-1926), a critical industrialist, political leader, and educator in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China. The deconstructed roof correspond to different functional zones: lobby, preface hall, exhibition hall, and service zone.

A blending of old and new, deconstruction and reorganization Inspired by the artworks of the artists Christo and Jeanne Claude, the pure white facade blends with the old building to sculpt the texture of time. As a homage to the surrounding environment, the design integrates into the city and coexists with the community.
