Following last week’s visit to Toronto’s Yabu Pushelberg, we are moving our Meet Your Next Employer series to Los Angeles where we find TOLO Architecture. Founded in 1998 by Peter Tolkin, the firm was renamed TOLO in 2018 after Sarah Lorenzen joined as a principal.

In mid-2017 we moved into our new space at 1024 Wilde Street. We designed and built out the warehouse to accommodate our office and a studio space for an artist. The office is spacious, which allows us to host events (we’ve hosted student reviews and AIA LA panel discussions).

Inspired by the Ed Ruscha painting, “Malibu = Sliding Glass Doors,” this design overlooking the Pacific Ocean acts as a viewing/veiling device between the seer and sea. The house is compressed between a series of retaining walls and a series of freestanding glass facades that slip past the edges of the volumes and reflect the landscape.
