In constructing the Chapel, wood was not used in any parts of the building except for the roof, domes, and staff heads holding the window sashes. The exterior is made from a rich, warm, reddish-brown sandstone. Fortunately records of the original designs still exist and are being utilized to restore them to their original beauty.

Subdividing the concrete structure into guest rooms and a restaurant, he retrofitted bespoke wood berths for beds and baths and fitted new shutters around existing windows.

Both the interior and exterior were in need of a makeover. The work included a kitchen remodel, new decks and the restoration of hardwood floors. An L-shaped terrace wraps around the exterior. The distance enabled the architect to create deep-set windows, further reducing solar gain and adding an artistic touch to the exterior.

For the exterior walls, the team used a mix of concrete and cypress boards that were charred using the ancient Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban , helping bolster the wood's resistance to insects and rot. In this Spanish Colonial Revival home in California, the beams in both the flat and sloped ceiling are highlighter with a darker finish for a dramatic effect. These could be curved or barrel-shaped tiles.
