Within the urban landscapes of Sydney’s Bellevue Hill, Zen Apartment comprises positive and negative spatial dynamics. The open floor plan was designed to fit the owners’ needs; each space within the home is flexible, shapeshifting over the day. Equal consideration was given to indoor and outdoor spaces.

In a nod to their creative vision, Architects Tom Mark Henry translated this notion – commonly seen on runways and in media – by designing an architectural embodiment of the concept — the Bronte Beach House. They wanted an inviting space for themselves and loved ones to come straight from the surf but didn’t want to compromise on glamour.

Hare + Klein redefined the floorplan and repurposed unused spaces that were once dimly lit and uninviting, by imbuing a new design language. The reconfiguration interconnects spaces, unifies materials and plays with levels to shape functional areas for the family. Taylors Bay Residence was an entry in 2023 INDE.

The façade further incorporates integrated landscaping planters, forging an intricate connection with the lush greenery of Paddington.

“The goal was to create a design that would enhance the ecosystem rather than impose upon it, and that would restore the well-being of our client,” says Kate Symons, director Studio Ilk. The design had to create large, open living spaces that would also provide a sense of intimacy and comfort, making the home feel like a true escape.
