The plans were submitted by Bristol Zoological Society, who have owned and managed the 12-acre Clifton site since it first opened in 1836. At the old zoo site in Clifton, some of the most iconic buildings will be sensitively restored and converted, with care taken to maintain their heritage features.

Historians postulate the existence of another soap factory in 1920s at close proximity of the site where the current soap factory is located. The beautiful stone building with an amazing timber roof structure promised a great potential however required a lot of work. The 1942 square meters site is also a grade I archeological site.

The front facade, which looks north and is clad in cement plaster, was restored and largely kept intact. The steel-framed canopies have wooden roof cladding to complement the original sheathing found in the wings. Atop the two-storey volume, clay tiles were replaced with concrete versions.
