The kitchen-dining zone spills without interruption into living and family rooms bordered by floor-to-ceiling windows and glass doors that open to the suspended upper deck, implying layered continuity.

The sense of vastness created by its double height, the abundance of natural light from the upstairs garden – filtered through metal-chain screens – and the pure white walls and polished-concrete floor contrast sharply with the exterior. The main volume, which looks east toward the city, is a rectangular bar that holds the public zone and primary sleeping areas. The exterior also features generous stretches of low-iron glass , known for its high transparency. Similar to the exterior, the interior design takes cues from the desert landscape.

Situated in Greater Boston’s city of Malden, the innovative community is the first of its type under Malden’s newly created Cohousing Zoning Ordinance, legislation that French 2D helped catalyze. Paths throughout the building and site provide accessible routes and common areas with richly layered interior and exterior spaces.

The orientation of each and every space, interior and exterior, to the surrounding vegetation, water, and sun largely drove the house’s siting and floorplan. Much of the house’s interior and exterior was given “living” finishes that will age beautifully and gracefully, lasting many years with little or no maintenance.
