The Expo – and the city district which will occupy the site afterwards – derives its underlying character from MVRDV’s arboretum concept, with an alphabetical library of trees and plants arranged into lots in a strict grid. The arboretum, based on its refined grid of small streets, forms the basis of the masterplan.

The design by UNStudio and OKRA Landscape Architects was chosen by the jury as the winning design by majority vote. The approximately 90 meter tall building will be located at the entrance of the city, culminating at the Belsenpark masterplan urban development in the district of Oberkassel, on the left bank of the river Rhine.

KCAP designed the corner block with 53 apartments and the landscaped courtyard. Zutphen is a city located some 30 km north-east of Arnhem, The Netherlands. KCAP designed the garden as a landscape with rich planting. The shared courtyard also contributes to social interaction and community building.
