Unlike a fale, we have placed bedrooms in the ‘attic,’ connecting each respective sleeping zone with either the ocean’s horizon or the bush. Our solution was to connect living spaces with the land and sleeping areas to the sky. This released the entire ground floor for flexible, communal living.

The pavilions were designed as square and rectangular buildings with exterior walls that are angled inwards at their base. Large vaulted arches on the sides of the buildings provide views from the interior across to the parkland. A large circular opening pierces the roof of the pavilion, adding a sculptural quality.

West of West has completed a concrete office complex in eastern Austin , Texas with flexible workspaces, community amenities and public greenspaces between buildings that reinterpret the neighbourhood's industrial context. There was a kind of beautiful roughness to the buildings. The entire building is concrete rather than glass.

Terracotta bricks, laid vertically and on a 45 degree angle, reference the tiled roofs of the adjacent houses and create a dynamic backdrop for the dappled light—filtered through the established street trees—to dance across. The bush-hammered concrete walls form the primary structure, define the exterior, and delineate the zones within.
