Canvas House features a rolling brick facade The 2022 design is a contemporary alternative to the yellow brick Georgian homes of the neighbourhood – which were popularised in Toronto from the 1920s to 1940s by Canadian architect John MacIntosh Lyle. The box-shaped homes are in a Tudor revival style and feature a centre hallway plan.

Subterranean WW2 bunker holiday home Dorset

After discovering a series of these abandoned, subterranean bunkers on their land, the client commissioned the architects to convert one into a functioning holiday letting. The brief was to celebrate the enormous historical significance of the structure whilst ensuring a habitable and commercially viable space for the client.

The extension is accessed by steps that also function as bookshelves and informal seating. Relocating an existing boiler cupboard maximised the opening between the kitchen and extension and opened up views through the house from front to back. A linear rooflight runs above the steps and floods the spaces with natural light.

This platform is used to create subtle changes in level across the site that differentiates between areas, with the playing field slightly sunken and surrounded by tribune-like steps that allow the community to watch games or gather informally. The client wanted to engage with the Noosa canals with the common spaces connecting directly to the water. The client wanted these spaces to be public and out in the open. What was the brief? In contrast, the upper floor where the sleeping quarters are located is a reprieve from the public.
