Site Area: 32,000 SFT (2,973 s.m.) New addition of Main lobby, 2nd floor balcony and auditorium entry, new administrative offices, and multipurpose studio theater.

Its new addition runs through the center of the entire building like a stem, unifying and reorganizing the Museum’s existing functions and enabling a seamless flow through the building and across the site. St Hilda’s was founded in 1893 and the College site has evolved into an informal sequence of buildings set within beautiful gardens on the banks of the River Cherwell. We understood the constraints of the College from the start, so the two-stage procurement route gave us time to work through issues before we got to site.

Running along the real-life washes that flank the property, the planting was installed two years before construction on the house began so that by the time it was completed in 2016, you couldn’t see it from the street. Distinctive uses of wood, including use of salvaged wood-some from an old building demolished on site and some “wormwood” salvaged from log booms-are featured throughout the building.
