It was named the Black & White Building as it replaces an earlier building on the site, a Victorian brick warehouse with a timber interior that had been painted black and white. Timber beams from the Victorian warehouse that previously occupied the site were kept and turned into wooden sculptures that decorate the ground-floor lobby.

The design process began with an on-site picnic, where a discussion focused more on the natural elements of the site rather than the building. Aluminium was used as a primary material for the project as it is manufactured on-site by Koma Modular. Curtains and curtain tracks were fitted to the perforated aluminium ceiling to informally divide and zone workspaces, providing its users and employees with privacy.
