Although the shape and form of the remodeled home remains relatively unchanged from its original design, we closely collaborated with our clients to take advantage of the ocean’s proximity by opening up the walls and providing framed views of the coast line. The client described it as living inside a tree.

The extension in Saitama has a covered terrace Unemori Architects converted the 151-square-metre building, which had already been remodelled and enlarged at least four times, into a home for the son and his family. Unemori Architects deliberately chose the wood as it matches the existing structure. Large windows let the light in.

Chinese studio FOG Architecture has turned a courtyard house in Beijing into a flagship store for fragrance brand ToSummer with exposed wooden roof trusses and columns. The studio exposed the wooden roof trusses and columns of the original building "We 'skimmed' the building to expose its 'skeleton'," said the studio.

Rather than bearing down and disturbing the creek below, the new structural system has been anchored to the bedrock within the flanks of the hill, suspending the home completely over the water. The first two floors’ structure and orientation follow the existing house, but the new third floor rotates 90 degrees to better relate to the site.

Occupying the space with the least amount of external connection, it allows habitable spaces to benefit from windows and doors (both existing in the original envelope and new within the recently carved lightwells) – there are now only two rooms without a window, the dressing room and the guest bathroom.
