Sports arenas and stadiums continue to be the stimuli for urban reincarnations. Stantec has several sports “district” projects underway in Dallas, Tampa, Chicago, and Edmonton. In Denver, the firm is proposing to transform a parking lot near Coors Field, home to the Colorado Rockies baseball team, into a mixed-used environment across an entire city block.

Years before launching EntreArchitect, I published a quarterly newsletter for my own residential architecture firm, Fivecat Studio. Without much effort, I acquired hundreds of subscribers through links on a few social media profiles. The newsletter was part of my marketing plan and every few months I half-heartedly scrambled to send something out. Even without the appropriate focus, we benefited directly with a few new projects and some positive quarterly buzz in the local press.

A solitary structure that stands defiantly as a reminder of what once was. photo credit: R.Saxon Albert Kahn's' National Theater is the only surviving theater in what was Detroit's first entertainment district. Designed in partnership with Ernest Wilby, it would be Kahn's only theater. Today, it sits prominently at 118 Monroe Street slowly decaying.

Since I spend a majority of my time trying exceedingly hard to not sound like an architect, it’s always a bit of a jolt to my system when I jump back into an environment when it’s actually important to sound like one. Ten U.S. health systems account for more than $21.5 billion of current and upcoming construction, according to a report from BuildCentral. “The healthcare sector continues to drive a major part of the construction market,” BuildCentral CEO Rick Kang said. “The top health systems have more than $12.3 billion in active projects plus another $9.2 billion in the planning stages.”.

Spread across 1.3 million sf in Austin, Texas the new East Austin District will provide the fast-growing city with its first pro-sports stadium and large-scale music arena. The 40,000-seat outdoor bowl is designed for large-scale soccer and rugby matches, music festivals, and other major events. The 15,000-seat multi-purpose arena is connected to the stadium and will serve as the home for Rodeo Austin, musical acts, basketball, and hockey. .

The Board of Directors and the Strategic Council of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) voted for Snow Kreilich Architects to receive the 2018 AIA Architecture Firm Award. The AIA Architecture Firm Award, given annually, is the highest honor the AIA bestows on an architecture firm and recognizes a practice that consistently has produced distinguished architecture for at least 10 years.

A Building Team led by R&A Architecture + Design has broken ground on The Camps at Coos Bay Lagoon, an RV camp and cabins park encompassing 103 acres along Camp Arago Highway in the Barview area of coastal Coos Bay, Ore. The project—which was designed in collaboration with its client NBP Capital, a commercial real estate fund—is scheduled for completion next April.

The majority of commercial and industrial contractors are confident about sales growth, profits and staffing levels heading into 2018, according to the latest Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Construction Confidence Index (CCI). Despite rising construction labor and materials costs, 55% of contractors expect their profit margins to expand in the first half of 2018.

Out of 30 coastal states and U.S. territories, 22 are performing at adequate to poor levels according to the Surfrider Foundation’s 2017 State of the Beach Report Card. The report suggests that the majority of coastal states need to make improvements and need support at the federal level for the Coastal Zone Management Act and more federal agency funding to protect coastlines.

Devastating wildfires in California earlier this year show that the state’s policy regarding fire safety has flaws. According to an article by a fire researcher, fire hazard maps do not take extreme weather patterns such as Santa Ana winds into account. The maps could also better address the vulnerabilities of what is actually exposed. The wildland-urban interface where developed lands are exposed to natural, flammable areas is often assumed to be where the exposure ends.

The Trump Administration’s proposed tax reform bill would kill off tax credits aimed at restoration of historic properties. Historic tax credits provide a 20% discount to developers who redevelop properties on the historic register and a 10% discount to developers who revitalize old properties not listed on the register.
