After the schematic design phase has been completed and a viable project budget has been developed, it is time to design the building’s structural system, layer in mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, and refine the design of functional spaces.

Most of the time I coordinate these site visits with some milestone or because the contractor has a question that requires my presence on site to answer … but I go by the job site even more than required because I truly enjoy being on site and watching how things come together. That plan is the sketch I’ve included just above.

As a step towards the schematic design refinements, my boss had prepared 6' long pencil-drawn and marker-colored large-scale wall sections on narrow sketch paper strips that showed how everything should fit together. That is true even for concept software such as Sketch-Up.
