It was a typical hot and muggy day in Atlanta when the bulldozer was driven off the flat bed trailer and sent to clear the site for a new shopping center. Sketch of dozer sinking into kudzu. The kudzu at the shopping center site had grown to a common height disguising a deep ravine and making the terrain appear to be flat.

The small site was crisscrossed with foot traffic and needed responsive circulation. As the bioswale grows in, it will get shaggy, denser, and the meticulously sited navigational star arrays and Tubman’s defiant words will get less visible. On the opposite side will be drawings on ceramic tile that Pozo sketched from photos of Owens.

The soil in my area of practice tends to be expansive because it contains a healthy dose of clay, which expands and contracts as moisture enters the equation. Remove water due to hot and dry conditions, and the soil contracts. Add water, through rain and irrigation, and the soil expands.
