Cradled in a skyrise apartment in India, the design brief for the Gurgaon Apartment was simple: to create a space devoted to showcasing the client’s illustrious collection of contemporary artworks, within its constraints as a rental. The lounge was designed with a dual function, as a space for unwinding and informal dining.

Standing out in that portfolio is the contemporary relic of Garden Lane Residence, a period restoration of a nineteenth-century Victorian terrace bordering the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne’s South Yarra. Colour field painting by Rothko inspired and helped inform the colour gradations throughout Garden Lane Residence.

I felt that this would give the space more character, but yet modernized it by painting everything in one colour – bone white. The venue welcomes seafood lovers from all over the world, arriving at Humback to enjoy the ever-popular fresh oysters offerings directly from Hama Hama Oyster Farm. The timber used is a smokey grey wash.
