The city is decentralized with walkable neighborhoods and commercial areas close to housing, parks, schools, and other amenities. Zoning separates uses leading to monotonous districts and reliance on driving to get the basics needed to live. It makes it hard for smaller scale projects and incremental development.

I was always intrigued by Christopher Alexander’s pattern language #160 “Building Edge” in which he implores us to “treat the edge of the building as a ‘thing,’, a ‘place,’ a zone with volume to it, not a line or interface with no thickness.”
