It is clad in untreated green English oak and features pitched roofs that were informed by Oxford's river boathouses and traditional wooden barns. The museum is divided into two volumes, which are connected by a glass and concrete footbridge. Inside publicly accessible spaces are bridged by glass passages that lead to the exhibition rooms.

This wider Abbey Wood masterplan is being redeveloped by not-for-profit housing association Peabody, with plans for thousands of new homes, public realm improvements and community facilities to be delivered over the next 20 years. They put together ideas and design buildings and places based on simplicity, logic and style.

Turf’s first task was to work with Foster + Partners, Ateliers Jean Nouvel, Johnson Pilton Walker, Tonkin Zulaikha Greer and Tzannes Associates to review and refine the original masterplan inherited with the project. A large public park was always central to the masterplan intent. Completion date: 2012. Project size: 22700 sqm.
