It is clad in thin marble and glass On top of that, the architecture studio had to deal with the existing foundation leftover from the cancelled Frank Gehry building initially planned for the site. The Perelman is one of the last buildings in architect Daniel Libeskind 's 2003 masterplan for the World Trade Center site.

I only met him once, at the Architecture Foundation in London with my boss Eva Jiricna (ex-Richard Rogers), but his influence was already pervasive on my thinking before starting at architecture school in 1989. Stirling Prize 2006 winner for the: Barajas Airport European Terminal , Madrid, Spain. Birmingham Library Competition 2006.

Following intensive consultation the practice drew up a masterplan for the whole campus stipulating much smaller buildings with external circulation along colonnades at two levels. Any change of any kind was going to be controversial and 17 redevelopment schemes have previously been rejected.

Owing to Meinhard von Gerkan’s active involvement, the practice has completed over 170 projects in China, including the conversion and extension of the Chinese National Museum in Beijing, and the masterplan for Nanhui New City near Shanghai. Von Gerkan was co-founder of the gmp Foundation and of the Academy for Architectural Culture (aac).
