Owing to Meinhard von Gerkan’s active involvement, the practice has completed over 170 projects in China, including the conversion and extension of the Chinese National Museum in Beijing, and the masterplan for Nanhui New City near Shanghai. A related effort is to develop charters that articulate a right to the city, such as the World Charter for the Right to the City, the European Charter for Human Rights in the City, and the Montreal Charter of Rights and Responsibilities. In Brazil, the right to the city has been codified in a national law, the City Statute (Fernandes, 2006).
