I only met him once, at the Architecture Foundation in London with my boss Eva Jiricna (ex-Richard Rogers), but his influence was already pervasive on my thinking before starting at architecture school in 1989. Owing to Meinhard von Gerkan’s active involvement, the practice has completed over 170 projects in China, including the conversion and extension of the Chinese National Museum in Beijing, and the masterplan for Nanhui New City near Shanghai. Von Gerkan was co-founder of the gmp Foundation and of the Academy for Architectural Culture (aac).

Employing mud as material is also the foundation for Sumaya Dabbagh’s EARTH TO EARTH, a curved wall structure that reflects the fundamental circularity and duality of a material which embodies both solidity and fluidity.
