We were commissioned by our clients to transform an outdated Flemish 3-fronted house with traditional rear extension into a contemporary home with plenty of light. The new home had to feel especially spacious and, above all, take advantage of the view to the green area behind. 

In the design, we kept the main house and replaced the rear extension. The newly added volume follows the same movement as the original side façade and juts out slightly each time. This gives the gabarit four bays, the last of which is inverted and opens up to the surroundings. 

The ground floor received a home office next to the entrance hall on the street side. The kitchen takes a central place in the house. From the kitchen, residents are in contact with all the rooms on the ground floor. Moreover, the rear of the house is bathed in light thanks to the large window.

During the renovation, the entire roof was renewed. Here, the choice was made to enhance the feeling of space in the bathroom by creating a void. A double-height fenestration provides beautiful views from the bath and shower. Furthermore, we find two spacious bedrooms on this floor. A new staircase to the attic provides optional use of the space under the roof. 

Attention was also paid to energy and water management during this renovation. The favourable orientation of the roof allowed the house to be equipped with solar panels. It was also decided to install a geothermal heat pump in combination with underfloor heating. 

A light grey decorative plaster was chosen as the facade finish. The joinery that was replaced on the front and side façades was given two exterior colours: the fixed panels are finished in a natural aluminium colour while the opening parts were painted pink. The new joinery in the rear façade is finished in pink, with the opening parts in a natural aluminium colour.

Inside, natural materials were chosen. On the ground floor, we find a polished poly concrete. The supporting structure and plywood finish of the ceiling was deliberately kept visible. Together with the wooden window structure, this creates a warm atmosphere. In the bathroom, a honey-coloured terrazzo floor finish was chosen, while the rest of the floor received parquet flooring. 

The result of this conversion is a home where residents can enjoy adequate privacy while still marvelling at the beautiful view.
