Aberdeen church amalgamations clear the way for dozens of homes

The Church of Scotland has moved to replace two surplus churches in Aberdeen with affordable homes following a process of amalgamation.

Working with David Murray Associates the religious body has applied for planning in principle to demolish Northfield Parish Church at Byron Crescent to permit 16 flats to be built.

The former Summerhill Parish Church at Stronsay Drive is to be developed in tandem, to be replaced by 14 homes. Both churches date from the mid-20th century during residential expansion and include an on-site manse and gardens.

At Northfield, proposals call for a colony-style model inspired by traditional 'double uppers' found across the city. Split between three blocks the properties will follow the street line with three-bed upper duplexes stacked above ground-floor apartments.

Over at Summerhill, the plan is to deliver 14 houses set amidst communal amenity space, repurposing an existing access road in the process.
