Buchanan Galleries go back to the drawing board

Landsec has reheated plans to overhaul the Buchanan Galleries shopping complex in Glasgow city centre with a request to proceed with a travellator and podium as part of the South Retail Extension.

A resubmission of approved plans from 2020 will permit enabling work to be delivered without proceeding with any above-ground works in tandem with an ongoing consultation programme.

Explaining the move Savills wrote: "These enabling below-ground works will help facilitate and accelerate the delivery of the wider Buchanan Galleries masterplan, which is currently being progressed through formal pre-application and an extensive programme of community/stakeholder engagement."

This follows the appointment of Foster + Partners to collaborate with Michael Laird Architects, Atelier Ten, Arup and New Practice on a new redevelopment masterplan that will pivot the galleries from retail toward homes, offices and leisure elements.

An application for planning in principle for the new masterplan is expected in January 2023.
