Inspiration #70: Kitchen Range Hood

Last week we looked at kitchen cooktop inspiration so it’s only fitting that this week we look at the other half of the puzzle: the oft-forgotten details of the range hood! A range hood is the unsung hero of the cooktop, a sometimes hidden workhorse that makes cooking a pleasant experience instead of smokey, smelly, and face-melting. This week – let’s look at range hood inspiration ideas that give that hardy vent the attention it deserves.

This is the latest in a weekly post of residential architecture inspiration. If you want to see past weeks, you can go here. If you want to see them curated on my pinterest (sometimes before they even hit the blog), go here.

A range hood can be simple. A piece unto itself that fits in minimally alongside other delicate design details, like this kitchen in The Netherlands by Lodder. (Might I also recommend you check out the rest of their kitchens because they’re exquisite) This range hood captures a simplicity of form and function, while clearly making a statement with its simple shape and deep color.

Another simple range hood that makes a statement is this black beauty by Clare Cousins in Australia. Offset by the rugged brick wall and minimal countertop and cabinets, this sleek vent cover cuts into the space and makes a focal point in the kitchen.

When designing the range hood, another option is to simply let the shape of the vent speak for itself. This modern kitchen shows off the hood with another favorite detail of mine – the aligned open shelf.

This boxed, stainless steel range hood design by la SHED sits in alignment with an open shelf design that wraps the kitchen. The combination of warm woods, white brick and cabinetry, and the line of cabinet create a great space that both plays up the range hood as an exclamation point, while keeping it in line with the overall design.

Or….you can go the opposite direction, where the range hood completely blends into the surrounding. This Studio Tate renovation created a kitchen, and cooktop vent, that did just that. The gorgeous white kitchen cabinets, countertops, backsplash, and range hood create a calm, blank slate as a part of this overall beautiful renovation. *chef’s kiss*

Another example of a white-out kitchen, including range hood, is the kitchen of Lotta Agaton. As you can see from their work, they love designing with muted, calm palettes – and this kitchen is no different. The range hood takes a larger format shape of the same running bond tile surrounding it.

My Simply Simple is a fellow Indiana gal with a great house she and her partner built with the help of a local architect, David Rausch Studio. Modern farmhouse touches abound, but the range hood in the kitchen is a definite highlight. The clean white box in alignment with natural wood shelves are two details which, when combined, create my current kryptonite. The beauty and simplicity are perfect.

What’s better than one open shelf and a range hood? TWO open shelves – duh. This beach house design by CLO Studios has modern and clean details in every room, culminating in this kitchen design with a pair of upper “cabinets” for the vent hood cover and cabinets over the sink. The line of open shelving connecting the boxes and the adjacent walls keeps the backsplash plane clean and simple.
