This afternoon, the New York firm Sage and Coombe Architects announced that it has recognized a union “requested by a committee of firm employees,” according to a statement published on social media.

The statement continued: “Although we are uncertain about the impact of this process on an architectural office of our size and history, we respect the right to organize and are proud of what the committee called our ‘humane, open, collegial, and supportive culture’.” Sage and Coombe Architects didn’t provide any further details on social media, besides confirming their commitment to continue serving clients after 30 years in practice.

A post shared on Instagram by Architectural Workers United, penned by the SCA Union, added: “Our union is rooted in our deep appreciation for our workplace and a shared vision of the opportunity it presents both for our office and the broader industry.”

Sage and Coombe Architects is the second architectural studio to successfully unionize. The first came last year when Bernheimer Architecture broke the glass ceiling. It also follows two unsuccessful union drives at Snøhetta and SHoP.

AN will report on the latest news at Sage and Coombe Architects as more information becomes available.
