Herz Recreation Center by Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects

Herz Recreation Center

On the edge of John McLaren Park and adjacent to the Sunnydale and Visitacion Valley neighborhoods, the new Herz Recreation Center will connect people to the park and to each other.

The new 12,500-square-foot Herz Recreation Center is part of a new campus serving as a gateway into John McLaren Park, the City’s second largest park.

The building has a park-focused approach, with strong indoor/outdoor connections and utilization of wood and mass timber construction to create a warm, nature-based interior.

The Recreation Center includes a gymnasium, professionally-sized basketball court with bleacher seating, a multi-use room for community events, and support services.

Outdoors in the park, there is an accessible community fitness plaza, nature exploration area, and gathering spaces. The design promotes connections to nature and safety, inviting spaces for a diverse neighborhood.

Combined with the adjacent Sunnydale Community Center, the project creates a new campus that supports connections to nature and provides a safe, lively and nurturing environment. The project is targeting LEED Gold and estimated completion is in 2025. Source by Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects.
