Mid-Rise Hotel

Marriott Autograph Hotel EMC², Chicago

EMC² is 22 story boutique hotel under the Marriot ‘Autograph Collection’ flag. The project includes 195 guestrooms, 2,000 square feet of conference space, and a 120 seat, street-front, restaurant. The theme of the hotel has been described by the Owner as ‘the intersection of art and science‘ and the interior design uses millwork, bookshelves, chalkboards, salvaged furniture pieces, and an endless collection of gadgets (including salvaged scientific equipment) to convey the feeling of a laboratory or classroom setting. In addition, contemporary art and sculpture can be found in public spaces and guestrooms to further the theme.  The hotel employs a number of high-tech features including destination elevators, robotic room service, and bedside control of all in-room conveniences.

The construction is composed of a reinforced concrete structure infilled with light gauge framing. The tower façade is clad with metal rain-screen panels with punched window openings. The panels have a subtle change in color to contrast the repetitive hotel room module. The base of the tower consists of a two-story curtain wall and vibrant, three-color, stainless steel panel system in isometric patterns. The terrace level’s exposed diagonal structure forms a transition from the lower public floors and the tower above.
