City 2050: What will your city look like in 2050?

Peering into the future is a favorite exercise for planners and designers. From the Chicago 1893 Columbian Exhibition to New York City’s two Worlds Fairs (1939 and 1965) and beyond, the future was optimistic and filled with cool technology and architecture. But not all views of the future were so hopeful. George Orwell’s dystopian novel “Nineteen Eighty-Four” (published in 1949) looked 35 years forward and painted a not-so-rosy vision of the future.

Tribute to 461 North Highland a Double Terminated Vista

I'm sure you know. 461 North Highland rewards every time so I'm giving it a shout out. We don't have many of these. We don't produce this kind of extravagance anymore not even in our most bodacious new mansions. It's probably my favorite building on North Highland. It's tucked into a little curve where Conquitt T-bones Highland. It's the northern most and fanciest of a fine little apartment block, tax records say they were built in 1915.

A new elementary school in Cambridge, Mass., aims at being a pilot for that city’s NZE commitment

The first Net Zero Emissions school, and the largest NZE building of any type, in Massachusetts is under construction in East Cambridge. In collaboration with William Rawn Associates, Boston-based architectural firm Arrowstreet has designed this 270,000-sf building, which will house King Open School for grades K-5 and Cambridge Street Upper School for grades 6-8.

Construction spending up in September; Down on a YOY basis

Nonresidential construction spending rose 0.5% in September, totaling $698.1 billion on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) analysis of data from the U.S. Census Bureau. However, nonresidential construction spending is down 2.9% on a year-over-year basis, with construction spending related to manufacturing down 20.3% since September 2016.

ASHRAE releases new version of Thermal Comfort Standard

ASHRAE recently published the updated 2017 Version of Thermal Comfort Standard Standard 55-2017. The update of the 2013 edition includes a new section with calculations from direct solar radiation. ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 55-2017, Thermal Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy, simplifies the language of the 2013 standard and clarifies the three comfort calculation approaches in Section 5.3.3, "Elevated Air Speed.".

A D.C. think tank taps Gensler for renderings that reimagine a possible future for nuclear power plants

More than 11% of the world’s electricity is produced by 447 commercial nuclear power reactors operating in 31 countries. The U.S. alone generates just under one-fifth of its electricity—19.7%—from 99 nuclear reactors operating in 30 states that produce 805.3 billion kilowatt-hours of power. AIA revises architect scope documents in latest contract form release

Drone users can now get instant authorization from FAA

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved a system for commercial drone operators to get instant authorization for low altitude use. Drone operators can use Skyward, the Verizon-owned drone operations management platform, to secure permission for flights in controlled airspace. Authorization will be granted through the FAA's Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC) services beginning this fall.
