Hawaii’s first net-zero public school

Kihei High School on Maui is slated to become the Hawaii Department of Education’s (HIDOE) first net-zero school and Maui’s first Hawaii-Collaborative for High Performance Schools (HI-CHPS) project. The school will serve grades 9 through 12 and be located on more than 77 acres of undeveloped land. The campus will comprise multiple buildings and approximately 215,000-sf.

Flying drones while inebriated now illegal in New Jersey

BD+C

Flying a drone after having too many drinks is now illegal in New Jersey. Governor Chris Christie signed a law this month that prohibits flying a drone with a blood alcohol content of 0.08% or higher, the same level as for driving a vehicle. Operating a drone while under the influence of drugs has also been banned. Anybody caught violating the law faces up to six months in jail, a $1,000 fine, or both.

Strong finish for architecture billings in 2017

The Architecture Billings Index (ABI) concluded the year in positive terrain, with the December reading capping off three straight months of growth in design billings. . The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the December ABI score was 52.9, down from a score of 55.0 in the previous month. The five U.S. markets with the largest hotel construction pipelines by project count are: New York (180 projects; 30,699 rooms), Dallas (149; 17,860), Houston (146; 15,714), Nashville, Tenn.
