FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

Shades of Grey

Earlier this year, while pursuing the work I did on Luzern, I noticed a parallel with Kathmandu. Both cities thrived on their position as gateways to mountain passes and long-distance trade. Also both cities sit on land masses (Italy and India) that floated up via plate tectonics and created spectacular mountain ranges (Alps and Himalayas) as they crashed into larger objects.

Burnham & Root, Masonic Temple. Above: Plan 18th Floor; Below: Plan 17th Floor. They were almost identical except for the exterior windows. I have dashed in the cantilevered walkways seen in the atrium photo that do not appear in these originals. It is apparent that these were added not only for privacy screening, but also to permit access to the smaller center hall without having to move through the larger halls. Escapade

Lines on Paper

Last week under a cloud of mounting deadlines, I chose to go for a bicycle ride instead of sitting down to work. Working from home has become an endless trail from Monday to Sunday, from morning to evening and through lunch as well. The swimming pool announced that it was re-opening. This fits neatly into a morning’s escapade; a bicycle ride to sketch outdoors (and even add water colours if the weather allows) followed by a swim before lunch.

Top Tips for Working From Home

The Student Architect

I know more people than ever are working from home right now. For some, this is bound to be a more permanent change now that, through necessity, the work-from-home model has proven to be effective and saves money, among other things. I've been working from home for over 4 years now, and I can remember how hard it was to get in a groove and work productively.

JUST TEASING

Envision 21. Online conference by the Enscape3d guys. Big thanks for inviting me to speak at the event. Maybe the best part of it was getting pushed into making a half-hour video of my session. Something I have never done before, and although my video editing is a bit quirky, I'm quite pleased with the results. Here's a first teaser, that I shared on LinkedIn yesterday.

English Buildings

Tin tabernacle As regular readers will know, I’m a great fan and regular user of Nikolaus Pevsner’s Buildings of England books, to which I refer all the time and which also inspire many of the explorations of English buildings that lie behind this blog. I am in no doubt that the series, with its comprehensive coverage of architecture – first in England and then in Wales, Scotland, and Ireland – is one of the greatest works of art history ever, in any country.* If I have a reservation about the b

The Architecture Professor

Burnham & Root, Masonic Temple, Chicago, NE corner of State and Randolph, 1890. Looking east along Randolph. (Online). So what would Root have used as his theme or concept for the design of the exterior of the Masonic Temple? 1. This was not just another speculative office building like the Rookery. It had a very special client that needed to be architecturally symbolized, much like the Woman’s Temple. 2.

Portland Stake Tabernacle

Historic LDS Architecture

The Portland Branch Meetinghouse, also known as the Portland Stake Tabernacle, is a lovely tudorbethan style building that was completed in 1929. The original Portland Branch building, completed in 1915, was outgrown, and so this large building was completed, and the old building was sold to the local RLDS (now Community of Christ) branch. This building still stands and it's lovely, although in 2019 the local ward stopped meeting here (I'm unsure if it was discontinued or relocated) and the buil

Why is Self-Development So Hard?

Mike LaValley

I believe people instinctively want something better for their lives. How we measure “better” though is up to each of us. Maybe better is improving your health. Maybe better is increasing your bank account. Maybe better is igniting your passion for your job. Maybe it’s a better job altogether. But why is it so difficult to obtain those things? Well, better comes with a cost—change.

I think the Masonic Temple was Root’s best building. I list it over the Monadnock Block simply because the Temple’s program was more complex than just a spec office building. While the Monadnock was a unique sculptural form, the Temple was an architectural synthesis of form and space. The 19-story open cab elevator ride with Lake Michigan behind you had to have been simply exhilarating.

Sustainable Architecture: Design Green with the Client in Mind

Speaker: Pedro Clarke – Principal Architect at A+ Architecture, In Loco Program Director

Sustainability begins with a conversation, and acquiring customer buy-in is entirely dependent on how the conversation is framed. Clients may not see sustainability as a priority out of fear of operational costs and quality. While these are legitimate concerns, it is our responsibility as architects to listen and foster a collaborative culture that answers client issues while also reducing our carbon footprint.
