Early Sunday morning, Annmarie and I left our three sleeping children in the care of their loving grandparents and took off across the United States to Sonoma County, California. For the third year in a row, we are attending the Custom Residential Architects Network (CRAN) Symposium. It’s our favorite conference of the year, where we have the opportunity to connect with fellow small firm residential architects from around the country.

What will hopefully make this presentation interesting is that the lecture is open to the general public so the audience will be made up of architects AND non-architects. Ferring Pharmaceuticals’ new headquarters building is being constructed on the urban fringe of Copenhagen in Kastrup. Designed by Foster + Partners, the 39,000 sm glass building consists of six stacked floors and sits above a stone plinth, giving the building the appearance of floating.

On the heels of six out of seven months of increasing levels of demand for design services, the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) fell just below the positive mark. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lead time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the August ABI score was 49.7, down from the mark of 51.5 in the previous month.

Sustainability begins with a conversation, and acquiring customer buy-in is entirely dependent on how the conversation is framed. Construction backlog for large contractors reached a new peak of 14.06 months during the second quarter of 2016 according to the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Construction Backlog Indicator (CBI) released today. The new high for companies with annual revenue above $100 million shattered the previous high of 12.25 months for any revenue segment, which was recorded in the first quarter of 2016 and second quarter of 2013. .

The project, known as OH-1 (it is located in Tokyo’s Ohtemachi business district), will consist of two high-rise buildings with 360,000 sm (3.88 million sf) of total floor space, and a landscaped public open space. A just published ANSI/ASHRAE data center energy standard features a performance-based approach that is more flexible and accommodating of innovations. ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 90.4-2016, Energy Standard for Data Centers, establishes the minimum energy efficiency requirements of data centers for design and construction, for creation of a plan for operation and maintenance, and for utilization of on-site or off-site renewable energy resources.
