2001 | New York Terrorist Attack

In the context of 14th week’s ARCH484 course, we have discussed New York, the terrorist attack and the remembrance of the crisis that took place in 2001. The mentioned crisis was about the Twin Towers which were an iconic part of the New York silhouette until they were destroyed by the jet plane. The reasons for why the building collapsed were listed concerning the structure system of the building. It is known that the truss system was durable with the addition of few number columns; thus the existence of a normal fire would have been tenable, however the intense amount of heat produced by the jet fuel caused the fall of the towers with the addition of the sprinkler system’s absence. After this crisis, how to remember and memorialise the event became the discussion point. Apart from this, many lessons were taken after that and the new regulations were added to the construction process of the skyscrapers.

In this context, all the ways and aspects of memorials can be found similar to the remembrance of this crisis such as the Ossip Zadkine’s heartless sculpture expressing Rotterdam after the Blitz as the destroyed city without its city center. Thus, even though the existence of the crisis had felt small-scale, compared to the other cases discussed throughout the semester, its impact or consequences had lasted longer and became a symbol.
