A new report on office fit-out costs in North America sets out to establish a range of benchmarks for three different office styles, and to suggest what businesses favor which style. JLL’s project and development services group, which produced the report, used data from more than 2,800 JLL-managed project budgets for over 100 clients from 17 industries in 59 markets throughout the U.S. and Canada.

My computer is dying … I am systematically killing it with all the stuff I keep on here. One of the things that frequently happens when you write a blog like mine ( i.e. a site that is graphically heavy with content ) is that your hard drive fills up pretty quickly. Yes, I keep stuff in the cloud and have multiple external hard drives, but those items only delay the electronic death that I sense is coming.

A report by the New Buildings Institute highlights where LEED certification aids in the goal of achieving net zero energy. “Getting to Zero Status Update and List of Zero Energy (“ZE”) Projects for 2018” is a digest of almost 500 certified, verified and emerging zero energy projects in the U.S. and Canada. The analysis shows that 70% ZE Verified projects are LEED-certified or registered with LEED.

It’s hard to believe that It’s been four years since the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) released LEED v4, and now, LEED v4.1, announced last November at Greenbuild, will be released by the USGBC later this year. And as I reflect on Greenbuild and the articles that have come out summarizing the changes in v4.1, I wonder how much difference v4.1 is going to make.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is reporting an increase in architecture firm billings for February from its Architecture Billings Index (ABI), with several key segments showing an encouraging outlook for 2018. “We remain optimistic about the trends we’re seeing at architecture firms this year with the ABI continuing to show growth in February,” said AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, Hon.

A two-story former Regions and First National Bank building is getting a second life as a modern café in Montgomery, Ala. Vintage Hospitality Group owns the building and spearheaded the transformation. As part of the renovation, the bank building’s terrazzo floors were refurbished and the teller window was transformed into a drive thru. Repurposed safety deposit boxes were used along the front of the counter as an homage to the building’s original function.

The $270 million John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital in Buffalo is a new 410,000 sf, 185-bed facility that is the regional perinatal center and ACS Level 1 pediatric trauma center. The Shepley Bulfinch-designed facility, which is the first freestanding pediatric health facility in New York, includes a 64-bed private room neonatal intensive care unit, labor and delivery unit, joint pediatric hematology/oncology unit, and comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services.

In 2015, the University of Hawaii (UH) and the Hawaii Legislature established a goal for the UH university system to be net-zero by Jan. 1, 2035. The Colburn School has selected Frank Gehry to join the all-L.A. team for the campus’s downtown Los Angeles expansion. The project will add three performance venues, an outdoor performance area, classrooms, a dance rehearsal center, and student and guest artist housing. The largest of the new venues will be the 1,100-seat concert hall, the Colburn School’s first venue for full-scale orchestra performances.

Construction employment increased in 248 out of 358 metro areas between January 2017 and January 2018, declined in 68 and stagnated in 42, according to a new analysis of federal employment data released today by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials said that future construction job gains could be undermined, however, as new tariffs force contractors to pay more for steel and aluminum products and dampen demand for new construction.
